The concensus out there is pretty clear – that using 301 redirects, its best to insure that there is not a dilution of link juice to our main directory index pages (such as the homepage, which is usually  index.htm, index.html, default.htm, etc)….

But some “authorities” have been saying that all directory root traffic should resolve to the index page.  As in, the actual URL up in the location bar should change, if I go from to

 But try as we might, the .HTACCESS directives got so screwy with that method, that we ended up following the advice of OTHER pundits… who said that all index.htm pages should rewrite to the directory!  After trying everything possible, we’ve decided that the latter is indeed best.
